Samaritan Cancer Care Center

Valet Parking, welcoming colors, soft furnishings, nice relaxing environment, warm blankets, goody baskets, soft lighting, and a personal welcome. Sounds like a nice spa right? Well, a couple days ago I had the opportunity to tour the new Samaritan Cancer Care Center. You know, the building we've all seen being built for the last several months on the corner of Highway 85 and Los Gatos Blvd. It’s not finished yet, but I learned about the amazing concepts they will implement and how it will soon serve not only our community but also the ones around us.

The Samaritan Cancer Care Center will be multifaceted serving the needs of a cancer patient and their families from beginning to end. Services will be streamlined under one roof. No running around to several locations filling in a ton of paper work for diagnosis, lab work, treatment, etc. They will also have an entire floor dedicated to Breast Cancer, and the beautiful top floor view will be for infusions, where patients often sit for several hours. There are many volunteer opportunities for the Samaritan Cancer Foundation (which will be located in the same building as the Samaritan Cancer Center).

There is nothing like it for our community. The bar is being raised on cancer care and I've already heard of clients who are involved on the volunteering end. In my opinion, this will be a place that we will want to and can donate to knowing it will serve our community directly.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month at Timeless Skin Spa

This month, to acknowledge Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Timeless Skin Spa is offering complimentary makeovers to women who are undergoing treatment for or are surviving cancer. We've presented certificates to some of our partners and affiliates in the local community to give to women they know who have been affected by the this disease. The makeover will be done using the Jane Iredale, The Skincare Makeup. Jane Iredale cosmetics are free of FD & C dyes, chemical preservatives (such as parabens), and synthetic fragrance.

We often receive inquiries about our lash extension service. Lash extensions can add length and/or volume to your existing lash line. Depending on the end result you have in mind, Jill will choose the appropriate extensions, or combination of extensions, for you. We decided to post before and after photos of a recent lash extension procedure performed by Jill to give you an idea of what can be accomplished with a new set of lash extensions.

Our clients most often come in for this service right before a special occasion, however, some do choose to maintain the look by coming in for "fills" or "touch up" every few weeks.

Summertime and Rosacea....

Rosacea is a chronic but treatable skin condition that mainly affects the central face.Typically it starts at age 30 and begins with flushing or redness that comes and goes. The condition can worsen overtime and left untreated bumps, pimples and blood vessels may form.

Most common triggers include but aren't limited to (in order of most common): are sun exposure, emotional stress, hot weather, heavy exercise and alcohol. Rosacea should be treated by a physician.

Stay cool this summer, wear your sunscreen and reapply often...

SPF 1,000,000!

I was recently explaining what the SPF number means to my family. Here's what I said, "If it takes 20 minutes for you to burn in the sun without sunscreen, then by applying SPF 30 that would allow you to stay out in the sun 30 time longer without burning." For example, 20 x 30 = 600 minutes. However, the higher number isn't as important as the re-application. When you are out in the sun, swimming or doing activities, your sunscreen will wear off whether you are wearing SPF 30 or SPF 100. So remember to reapply for best sunscreen protection.

I just finished training my first areola tattoo student. It was a wonderful experience sharing the knowledge and expertise I've accumulated over the past few years. My student sent me an email and said: " I really learned a lot yesterday it was GREAT! Our model said that she had such a great experience that she's telling everyone she felt the "Queen of Standford", so thank you for being such a great instructor."

I hope to reach many others who have an interest in the art of areola tattooing. It is so rewarding to be involved in the area of making a difference.

An Educational Week....

I just enjoyed a whole week at the SPCP permanent makeup convention. Every year this is a great way to keep up with the latest in the industry and network with colleagues as far away as Australia.
I took a two day training course so I'm recognized by my industry peers as a SPCP certified trainer.
After that, I spent 3 days attending seminars as well a specialized areola seminar.
Then, I spoke at an off site power workshop hosted by one of our industries top leaders... what did I speak about? One of my favorite procedures; EYEBROWS...
After all that education and nights of fun, I'm ready to dive back into work and create more beautiful permanent makeup... and train other technicians...(eyebrows is my specialization that I will train others).

Recently a client came into Timeless with unruly brows. She is one of our longtime clients who has heavy brows and usually prefers to keep them a bit on the thicker side when we wax. While she was browsing through a magazine waiting for her appointment, our client found an advertisement that struck her. She handed it over to Jill and said, "I want these brows" referring to the shapely, well-architected brows of the model in the picture. Jill was happy to put her artistic waxing and tweezing skills to work to match the brows. Our client felt like she'd had an instant eye lift because her newly groomed brows brightened her whole face!

Even if we don't manage to get away someplace balmy and tropical, summer is a season that inspires a slower pace and ice-tea attitude. But we sometimes forget how to quiet ourselves when autumn falls around us. So, we encourage you to pause between your daily obligations. Go for a walk. Get a massage. Breathe. Because this is your life, and taking care of yourself today is a way to save up good health for the rest of the season.

Think Pink This Month.
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This is near and dear to our hearts. Timeless Skin Spa offers permanent cosmetic procedures that include nipple areola restoration after breast reconstruction, as well as eyelash enhancement and simulated eyebrow hair procedures for alopecia and cancer patients.
“I generally see women at the end of their long and challenged journey,” said Jill Hoyer, owner of Timeless Skin Spa. “It is very gratifying and essential to provide results which impart self-confidence and a satisfied ending for the client. I strive to restore the area as close to natural as possible.” Jill teams with various doctors who realize the importance of areola re-pigmentation. She often see patients of Dr. Berkowitz of Los Gatos CA. He says:

“Restoring a woman’s body after mastectomy is an important part of her overall recovery. Re-pigmentation of the nipple and areola plays a critical part.”

Hoyer does traditional permanent makeup as well. She uses similar artistic tattooing methods whether its hairline simulation in the eyebrows or to recreate the nipple areola of the reconstructed breast. Hoyer believes in providing balance and symmetry, as well as a soft natural look to the area.

“This work is very rewarding and so worth the time it takes to accomplish each procedure” said
Hoyer.

Jill's goals for October are to serve people in need through Latinas Contra Cancer and to create awareness of areola tattoo services for patients who have been reconstructed. Jill will provide a needs-based opportunity to five qualifying cancer survivors during October in what she calls "Open Door October." Jill says, "Doing a needs-based service brings my services to another level. I'm thrilled I can use my skills to help women regain their self esteem, self confidence and feel whole again." Ask the Esthetician: Is there an easy way to exfoliate?

An easy way to exfoliate every time you wash your face is to use a wash cloth. Think about washing a car by just squirting water over it vs. washing the car with a cloth. You will get more off with the cloth, right? Be very gentle with your face and use small delicate strokes in an upward motion, rinsing often. Also, be sure to use a fresh wash cloth often. We recently found some perfect wash cloths, and liked them so much that we decided to carry them at Timeless. They are are just the right size and made of lush microfiber with antibacterial protection. Two different sizes are available, and they are machine washable. For an even more professional cleansing, you can also try the Clarisonic Pro.
